Dona Rosa & ensemble concert

Fado is a musical genre that can be accurately traced to the 1820s in Lisbon, Portugal but probably has much earlier origins. It is characterized by mournful tunes and lyrics, and is infused with a sentiment of resignation, fatefulness, and melancholia. Listeners can feel the sorrow from the unique sound of the Portuguese guitar and the singer's ethereal and moving voice. Dona Rosa, born to a poor family in Oporto, Portugal, was stricken blind by an illness at the age of four. While begging for a living in the street, she learned to sing Fado. By incorporating her life experience into the songs, she is displaying to the world the beauty of the traditional art, as well as her determination to fight for her own destiny.
