The East Lake Scenic Area

There are numerous historical relics in this area, which cover a tremendous time span. They include the Tomb of the Chu King, the Drinking Pond for the Chu King’s Horse and Qinghe Bridge of the Spring and Autumn Period and Warring State Period, the Tomb of the “Barbarous King” of the Eastern Han Period, the Shadowless Pagoda left over by Emperor Yuan of the Liang Dynasty, the Spring of Superb Swordsmanship devoted to Guan Yu and the Temple of Cao Cao of the Three Kingdoms Period, the Releasing-the-Eagle Pavilion in memory of Li Bai of the Tang Dynasty, and the Monument to the Nine Heroines of the Taiping Revolution.

The six classic sightseeing spots are Tingtao (listening to waves), Moshan Hill, Luohong, Luoyan (falling of wild geese), Baima (white horse) and Chuidi (playing the bamboo flute). The tourists receive total 2 million person-times per year.

Tingdao is mainly a recreational park featuring aquatic entertainment and the flavors of ancient Chu Culture. The memorial hall and the Xingying (Poem-Reciting) Pavilion in memory of Qu Yuan, an outstanding figure of the Chu State, are important landmarks of the East Lake scenic zone.

Moshan Hills feature both the flavors of Chu Culture and botanical gardens. Moshan Hill takes its name from its millstone-like appearance (Mo in Chinese means a millstone). On top of the hill is the Zhubei Pavilion in memory of Mr. Zhu De’s visit to and best wishes for the East Lake. The Imitation “Chu City” leaning on the hill covers an area of about 5 square meters, with the city gate, the “Chu market” and the Chu Ci Veranda (in memory of the poetry of Chu) in picturesque layout. The statues of the phoenix (the totem of the Chu State) and the legendary God of Fire (the earliest ancestor of the Chu State) tell stories about the ancient Chu Culture. In addition, there is the Plum Garden of Moshan Hill, the biggest garden of potted landscape in Hubei Province and one of the four most famous gardens of Chinese plum flowers. In late winter and early spring, a grand display of Chinese plum flowers is held in the garden, where various rare strains of plum flowers seem to vie with one another for beauty and feature, showing a spring’s picture.

Luoyan faces Moshan Hill across the lake and is a recreational park featuring the Chu customs. There is mass of reeds around the isolated islet in the lake, where flocks of water birds are often seen flying over the lake in long queues against the sunset glow.

Luohong is a landscape preservation zone, where there is the Shadowless Pagoda built in Southern Song Dynasty, the Hongshan Pagoda built in early Yuan Dynasty, the Baotong Buddhist Temple, and Zhuodao Spring (the Spring of Superb Swordsmanship), which is said to be “poked” by Guan Yu with his sword. Wuhan University, considered one of the most scenic of universities in the country, is also located in this area.

Chuidi is a recreational and tourist area characterized by its wooded hills and idyllic appeal. The Ma’anshan Forest Par is situated here.

Baima is an area for recreation and sightseeing which features rehabilitation tour and fitness activities.

Each of the classic sightseeing spots has its own distinct characteristics and unique style.
