I have gained many experiences during two years'living in Wuhan, some are forgotten while some remain fresh in my memory. The most unforgettable is what I experienced during the bombing of the Chinese Embassy in Yugoslavia during the Kosovo war.
After the bombing, the demonstration happened not only in Beijing, but also in Wuhan which mainly targered the French Consulate in Jianshe Avenue. My Chinese friends warned me not to go out, and the German Embassy also warned me to behave carefully. When I stood on my balcony and saw the demonstration passing by,I could not help joining them. This brought back memories of the demonstration with many of my friends opposing the Vietnam War in Germany. I have some different views towards the Kosovo War, but one can not just sit here and watch the people being expelled and killed. I believe that the bombing was a mistake since the USA is not so foolish as to plan a bombing to damage the existing flourishing Sino-US relationships. The anti-war demonstration is just,I attended it without any hesitation and came to the French Consulate.
I talked with the students since they could speak English. Some of them at first opposed me while most protected me and expected my views on the issue. I jumped onto the top of the steps in the front of the Consulate with two lines of policemen standing just at the back of me. I made a short speech at this rare occasion. After the speech, I walked down the stairs and the group made a way for me to go through, some applauded. This experience gave me an unforgettable memory in my life. The bright future must belong to those sincere and frank young people who have a strong sense of responsibility. |
