My Friend in Wuhan
Wu Di and I became acquainted on March 20th.  On that day students of the Japanese Department and we who came from Soka University of Japan were having a get-together. I had wanted to become good friends with the Chinese because I held that the friendship between China and Japan lies in the friendly association between each individual Chinese and Japanese. As I was very poor in Chinese I was worried that I might not be able to make friends. Wu Di came over and said to me: “Hell! Let's talk together. I'm Wu Di.  What is your name?” And then we talked a lot. She was hard working and spoke very good Japanese. We soon became good friends.

A week after that she suddenly came to my room。She asked me: “Are you free? I'd like to show you roundthe campus”. I was only too ready to agree. As we went round the campus, she told me things on campus in great detail in Japanese. Sometimes she would stop and ask me “Am I speaking Japanese correctly?” Then we went to her dormitory in Ying Yuan(the Cherry Garden) where we chatted and sang songs. She sang some Chinese songs and she was such a beautiful singer! We talked in Chinese.  When we couldn't understand each other, we would write Chinese characters out, which easily solved the problem. That made me see once again how we have benefitted from the Chinese culture in ancient times.

We then went to Gui Yuan (the Osmanthus Garden) for supper and she treated me to a rich meal.  She said to me: “How I admire you! Someday rll go to Japan myself.” And I asked her: “Which university in Japan do you wish to go to?” She answered: “The University of Tokyo, because it is the best in Japan.” She seemed very much determined. But as I thought the Soka University was the best, I said to her:“1 wish you would go to the Soka University.” And I showed her a picture of the Soka University and told her something of the founders of the university. As my Chinese vocabulary was very limited,I had a hard time putting across my idea in Chinese and I felt so sorry that I nearly cried. She said with a smile: “Don't worry. You'll tell me more when you have improved your Chinese.  OK?” Certainly I would!

Our friendship has just started and I believe this friendship will deepen. And I'll maintain our friendly relationship even after I return to Japan.
